The Milán Füst Writer’s Award and the Milán Füst Poet’s Award On 1 November 1975, Mrs. Milán Füst, née Erzsébet Helfer made a public covenant endorsed by Hungary’s Minister of Culture, for the purpose of providing moral recognition and financial support to those writers and poets who, in the spirit of Milán Füst’s literary activity, express in their works the values of universal human progress at a high artistic level. The Milán Füst Writer’s Award and the Milán Füst Poet’s Award are each granted by a three-member Advisory Board to two writers and two poets respectively in alternate years. The chairmen and one member of the Advisory Boards are writers and poets respectively; the third member is the current head of the Department for Literature at the Hungarian Ministry of Culture. Since 1999, the interest on the funds donated by Mrs Milán Füst towards the awards, HUF 1 million, has no longer covered the total for the awards to be granted. Therefore, in accordance with Mrs. Milán Füst’s public covenant and last will and testament, as well as with the Foundation Deed of the HAS Milán Füst Translation Foundation, the money awards, together with the medals and certificates that go with both the writer’s and the poet’s awards, have been supplemented by the HAS Milán Füst Translation Foundation.
